Camion 1,5 t gl Unimog S 404 B
En 1954/55, la Bundeswehr allemande called for the design et production d’un camion utilitaire de 1,5 t avec exceptional cross-country driving ability. Daimler-Benz won the bid avec a véhicule called "Universal-Motorengerät" - Unimog. Over 65,000 Unimogs were produced, 36,000 for the Bundeswehr, the remainder for other NATO forces et usage civil. Unimogs are popular forestry et farm véhicules in a number of European countries, et many ex-military Unimogs have been converted to mobil homes for overland adventure travel. En 1978 the second generation Lkw 2t tmil gl - Unimog U 1300 L - was introduced et it has gradually replaced the original Unimog as the standard military utility véhicule in the Bundeswehr. In the 1960s et 70s, when dedicated véhicules de transport de troupes were in short supply, a number of Bundeswehr Panzergrenadier bataillons used camions Unimog 1.5 t as infantry squad carriers. These units were designated Panzergrenadierbataillon (mot.), et they were converted to Jäger (light infantry) status en 1972. Some Jäger bataillons retained the Unimog, others received M113 véhicules de transport de troupes handed down from Panzergrenadier units who had upgraded to Schützenpanzer Marder 1 infantry fighting véhicules.
