It is a popular misconception that la Guerre de Sécession was fought between Union et Confederate armies uniformed in dull blue et drab grey respectively. In fact, both armies included exotically-named corps dressed in a variety of European styles whose gorgeous uniforms compared more than favourably avec the most ornate of Napoleonic France – Zouaves et Chasseurs, Hussards et Écossais, Lanciers, Bersaglieri et Riflemen.
