Corps de Chars Soviétique, 1942–1945

M3 scout car supplied to the Red Army under the Lend-Lease program. Scout cars may be used to motorize the SMG Battalion which was an integral part of the Tank Brigade. Non-elite formations were not usually equipped in this way et their infantry rode on the back of the chars they were supporting.

En 1942, tank brigades used a mixture of chars légers, moyens et lourds, depending on what was available to them. As production of the T-34 increased, the brigades became more homogeneous. For wargaming purposes, the following combinations of tank bataillons may be used:

1 bataillon léger, 1 bataillon moyen, et 1 bataillon lourd
1 bataillon léger et 2 bataillons moyens
2 bataillons moyens, et 1 bataillon lourd
3 bataillons moyens, of which one ou more may be using chars T-34/85

Distant Action Raiders

L’armée soviétique differentiated certain types tactiques des chars:

D.D. Tanks (T-35, T-28, KV-1, KV-85, IS) - Distant Action Raiding Tanks
N.P.P. Tanks (BT, T-46, T-34, etc.) - "Cavalry" Breakthrough et Flanking Tanks
D.P.P. Tanks (T-18, T-24, T-26, T-46, etc.) – Char d’Appui d’Infanterie

Chars D.D. operated without infantry support, et this explains why some chars KV-1 counter-attacked et penetrated bien en arrière des lignes allemandes. As the war progressed, it was found that the T-35 was a practical char D.P.P., et the BT made a good char de reconnaissance. Accordingly, these véhicule changed roles. The T-46 is a T-26 avec BT wheels et tracks.
